9 Things I Learned From A Sick Woman

. .

Knowledge surrounds us.  It’s at our fingertips.  I have a wonderful set of the Encyclopedia Britannica but my smart phone and other electronic toys makes the encyclopedias a relic of the past.

Each moment of our day holds the potential for learning.  But we must reach out to receive it.

Wisdom and knowledge are both at our finger tips but we overlook the value to settle for the mundane or the latest television program.

In fact, way too often we ignore the greatest source of wisdom the world has ever known for the ‘has been’ or ‘never will be’ options.

While wisdom and knowledge are everywhere. . .you can learn something from everybody.  In fact, I learned nine valuable lessons from a sick woman.

This lady’s story is in Mark 5 where it’s so clearly and intimately told that I feel as though I know her.  I even mentioned her last week when we were teaching on financial healing.

Here are nine things I learned from a sick lady.

1)            This Lady Needed A Miracle.

Mark 5:25 in the New Living Translation says:

“A woman in the crowd had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding.”

She had suffered a hemorrhagic condition for 12 years.

According to the Law of Moses, she was “unclean.”

She could neither touch nor be touched.

She could not hug her children.

She could not kiss her husband as he left for work.

One day, this lady was probably watching the evening news as they reported on Jesus of Nazareth being in the area.

Something stirred in her. . .she knew this was her opportunity for a major miracle in her life.

Job 5:9 in the New Living Translation says:

“He does great things too marvelous to understand. He performs countless miracles.”

2) God Does Expects Us To Do What We Know To Do.

Mark 5:26 in the New King James Version says:

“And had suffered many things from many physicians. She had spent all that she had and was no better, but rather grew worse.”

God expects you to do what you can do.

If your faith is at the level of believing God to give the doctor wisdom, then go to the doctor.  If you can believe the Word of God, believe God to heal you.

Move in faith, take medicine, change your diet…do what you know to do.

There are two kinds of healing.

There is natural healing which comes through plenty of rest, proper nutrition and exercise or through doctors prescribing medications that aid the natural healing process.

There is also supernatural healing.  God does heal through doctors and medicine but it takes the supernatural power of God to break all the power of the devil who brings on sickness and disease as explained in Luke 13:6:

“And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day.”

Do what you know to do.

3)  She Responded To The Prompting Of The Holy Spirit.

Mark 5:27 in the New King James Version says:

“When she heard about Jesus. . .”

She believed in her heart.

Faith came alive when she heard about the miracle ministry of the young preacher named Jesus.

The Holy Spirit is constantly communicating with the Church.

He is revealing the plan of Jesus for the Church at large.

He is revealing the plan of Jesus for us individually.

He is constantly reminding us of the Word of God.

The question is. . .He’s talking but are we listening.

John 10:27-28 in the Classic Amplified Bible says:

“The sheep that are My own hear and are listening to My voice; and I know them, and they follow Me.  And I give them eternal life, and they shall never lose it or perish throughout the ages. [To all eternity they shall never by any means be destroyed.] And no one is able to snatch them out of My hand.”

4) She Acted On Her Faith.

Mark 5:27 in the New King James Version says:

“. . .she came behind Him in the crowd and touched His garment.”

This was a big thing.

Remember, she was ceremonially unclean.

Jesus was a Rabbi. Touching any human was unacceptable for this lady.

Touching a Rabbi? Risky business!

As we discussed in financial healing. . .she not only touched Him she grabbed a hold of Him.

When we read the word touch, we likely think of a gentle, maybe faint tap with a finger or hand.  However, when God directed me to look up touched in the Strong’s Concordance, it was revolutionary. The Greek word G680 means:

“to fasten one's self to, adhere to, cling to, become one as in intercourse.”

God showed me it’s going to take more than a light touch of faith to heal your emotions, body and finances. If you want healing. . .you must fasten, adhere and cling to His Word. . .making it one with you.

We cannot lightly touch the Word of God and expect our problems to be solved.

This sick lady acted in faith.

5) She Spoke Her Expectation.

Mark 5:28 in the New Living Translation says:

“For she thought to herself, ‘If I can just touch his robe, I will be healed.’”

She spoke her faith.

What are we speaking when it comes to our expectations for miracle manifestation?

Proverbs 18:20-21 in the Amplified Bible says:

“A man's [moral] self shall be filled with the fruit of his mouth; and with the consequence of his words he must be satisfied [whether good or evil]. Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they who indulge in it shall eat the fruit of it [for death or life].

In speaking the Word. . .we can speak to our expectations.

6) She Received Her Miracle And Testified Of Her Sense Of Change.

Mark 5:29 in the New King James says:

“Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the affliction.”

She knew God had worked a miracle.

When my fine wife Bev was healed of asthma…she testified.

When our oldest daughter Abby was healed of meningitis and encephalitis…we testified.

When the Debt Free Army received an inheritance of $85,000 from a totally unexpected source…we testified.

When there was no cancer in my body after the surgery…I testified.

Do we see a pattern here?

We are made overcomcers “…by the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony,” (Revelation 12:11).

7) She Knew A Miracle Worker.

Mark 5:30-31 in the New King James Version says:

“And Jesus, immediately knowing in Himself that power had gone out of Him, turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched My clothes?”

31 But His disciples said to Him, “You see the multitude thronging You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’”

Jesus was no longer an abstract in her thinking.

She was not serving a God who did supernatural things hundreds of years ago…she was in relationship with an On-Time God!

And yes, there is an on-time God moving in your behalf.

8) Her Thankful Spirit Outweighed The Opinions Of People.

Mark 5:32-33 in the New King James Version says:

“And He looked around to see her who had done this thing. 33 But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth.”

She had broken The Law.

She had touched a man to whom she was not married.

She had touched that man while “unclean.”

The full weight of the Law was hanging above her head.

But she refused to be silenced…she testified.

People will deliberately discourage you when you testify.

Some will ignorantly discourage you when testify. I have a friend who testified of God doing something financial for his family at Christmas.

The response from his family was a strange one.  They said: “You’ll have a need again.”

My friend said. . .”Yes, I will…and God will meet it…again!”

9) Her Life Was Changed… Forever.

Mark 5:34 in the Amplified Bible says:

“And He said to her, Daughter, your faith (your trust and confidence in Me, springing from faith in God) has restored you to health. Go in (into) peace and be continually healed and freed from your distressing bodily] disease.”

She had clearly received a miracle.

Yet, she still had to choose to go forward in faith.

Frankly, that’s a choice we make every day.  Do we move by faith or do we live in fear?

This sick lady. . .who had the issue of blood. . .can teach us a lot. . .if we will just learn from her.
