Have you ever been in a situation where you needed an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) to administer immediate assistance or provide transportation?
I remember when a volunteer Rescue Squad was formed in my hometown of LaGrange, North Carolina. This dedicated group of men and women donated their time for training and responding to emergency situations.
I also remember that every time the LaGrange Rescue Squad was dispatched on an emergency call. . .it was reported in our local newspaper, The Weekly Gazette. It’s a bit humorous (kinda) that everything reported from having a baby to having a heart attack was referred to as a “sudden illness.”
Over the years, the title of the organization evolved into EMTs. . .truthfully, the name does have a little more pizazz.
The protocols used by EMTs has an amazing parallel to spiritual EMTs otherwise known as “Emergency Miracle Technician.”
Now you’re probably wondering who in the world is an Emergency Miracle Technician and how in the world. . .do you become designated, trained and identified as such.
Is the spiritual EMT your pastor. . .it could be.
Is the spiritual EMT anyone operating in any of the other ministry gifts listed in what we traditionally refer to as the five-fold ministry offices. . .apostle, prophet, evangelist, teacher and pastor. . .it could be.
Actually, an Emergency Miracle Technician is anyone who believes the Word of God and has the faith to manifest the promises in the book.
Daniel 6:27 in the New Living Translation says:
“He rescues and saves his people; he performs miraculous signs and wonders in the heavens and on earth. He has rescued Daniel from the power of the lions.”
Smiling. . .is and should always be your First Responder to an emergency situation.
Do you qualify to be an Emergency Miracle Technician?
I’m going to list seven things that you need to have in order before you can become an effective Spiritual EMT.
1. You’re born-again.
2. You’re not compromising with sin.
3. You’re strengthening yourself with the Word of God and spending time in His presence.
4. You’re tithing and giving offerings.
5. You’re free of unforgiveness in your heart.
6. You’re obeying His instructions.
7. You’re full of faith and the Holy Ghost.
If you answered “check” to each of those seven points, then you’re ready to learn the “seven keys to being a spiritual EMT.”
1. Always be ready for the 911 call.
If you want to be a Spiritual EMT then you must be ready to answer the call. . .even when it’s not convenient. . .or on your timetable.
You may be eating dinner. . .when a friend calls. . .needing a miracle in their finances.
You may be watching your favorite television program. . .it’s okay to admit you have one. . .when you get a call from someone taking a love one to the emergency room at the hospital.
Like a natural EMT. . .you have to be ready whenever the call comes. . .you have to be ready for the spiritual rescue.
The great news is that our Heavenly Father is on call 24/7.
Psalm 91:15 in the New Living Translation says:
“When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them.”
Sometime back I did a teaching entitled “7 Things About 911.” Each of the seven things referenced to various chapter nines verses elevens in the books of the Bible. Visit www.haroldherring.com read the article. . .it’s on the home page. You’ll be glad you read it.
Psalm 50:15 in the New Living Translation says:
“Then call on me when you are in trouble, and I will rescue you, and you will give me glory.”
Psalm 34:17 in the Message Bible says:
“Is anyone crying for help? God is listening, ready to rescue you.”
2. Analyze the situation.
When you arrive in an emergency situation. . .you need to diagnose the situation. If you don’t properly understand what you’re dealing with. . .then you may begin the wrong treatment.
If a natural EMT misdiagnosis a problem. . .it could be a matter of life or death.
In the spiritual realm. . .a misdiagnosis could also have life and death consequences.
Proverbs 18:21 in the Message Bible says:
“Words kill, words give life; they're either poison or fruit—you choose.”
In order to analyze any situation you need discernment and preparation.
Hosea 14:9 in the New Living Translation says:
“Let those who are wise understand these things. Let those with discernment listen carefully. The paths of the Lord are true and right, and righteous people live by walking in them. But in those paths sinners stumble and fall.”
Discernment allows an EMT to quickly and accurately assess any situation.
Spiritual preparation is also critical.
Joshua 7:13 in the New Living Translation says:
“Get up! Command the people to purify themselves in preparation for tomorrow. For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Hidden among you, O Israel, are things set apart for the Lord. You will never defeat your enemies until you remove these things from among you.”
As I was reading this verse I was looking for something to encourage daily preparation when God showed me another powerful truth.
God instructed the children of Israel to purify themselves . . .in the King James Version He says sanctify yourselves. According to the Strong’s Concordance the Hebrew word for sanctify means:
“to consecrate, sanctify, prepare, dedicate, be hallowed, be holy, be sanctified, be separate.”
Part of your daily preparation as a Spiritual EMT should be to sanctify yourself . . . consecrate and yes, prepare yourself for what lies ahead. This procedure will help you more accurately assess every emergency situation.
3. Administer life-saving procedures in the situation.
A medical EMT will use cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation in emergency situations.
CPR is a procedure performed in an effort to preserve brain function until further measures are taken to restore blood circulation and breathing in a person with a cardiac arrest.
Spiritual CPR is also performed by mouth in emergency situations. If a person is facing a catastrophic situation of any sort. . .sickness, financial or marital distress. . .they need the comfort, strength and life-saving properties found in the Word of God.
As a Spiritual EMT you’re positioned to speak soul-saving, life-changing, destiny-shaping words to the person facing an emergency situation.
Ephesians 4:29 in the Amplified Bible says:
“Let no foul or polluting language, nor evil word nor unwholesome or worthless talk [ever] come out of your mouth, but only such [speech] as is good and beneficial to the spiritual progress of others, as is fitting to the need and the occasion, that it may be a blessing and give grace (God's favor) to those who hear it.”
As a Spiritual EMT. . .you are being prepared for a life of service. You are being strategically positioned at the right place at the right time.
Ephesians 6:13 in the Message Bible says:
“Be prepared. You're up against far more than you can handle on your own. Take all the help you can get, every weapon God has issued, so that when it's all over but the shouting you'll still be on your feet. Truth, righteousness, peace, faith, and salvation are more than words. Learn how to apply them. You'll need them throughout your life. God's Word is an indispensable weapon. In the same way, prayer is essential in this ongoing warfare. Pray hard and long. Pray for your brothers and sisters. Keep your eyes open. Keep each other's spirits up so that no one falls behind or drops out.”
Anybody who’s not born-again needs cardiopulmonary resuscitation. They need to take a dirty heart and present it to the Lord to make it clean again.
As a Spiritual EMT you will meet people whose finances may be on life support. . .so you may need to fire up the defibrillator. . .and use the paddles to resuscitate their economic pulse.
4. Stabilize the situation.
It’s important for every EMT to calm down the patient. . .to bring peace into the midst of their situation.
I’m not talking about peace born of a natural mind but peace born of the spirit.
You will deal with some people who’ve had relatively little peace in their lives. Truthfully, they don’t even understand what it means.
Romans 3:17 in the Amplified Bible says:
“And they have no experience of the way of peace [they know nothing about peace, for a peaceful way they do not even recognize].”
You are to bring stability to any and every stormy situation.
John 14:27 in the Amplified Bible says:
“Peace I leave with you; My [own] peace I now give and bequeath to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. [Stop allowing yourselves to be agitated and disturbed; and do not permit yourselves to be fearful and intimidated and cowardly and unsettled.]”
One of the things I always tell those. . .who’re facing emergency situations is to look out their window. Then I ask if they can see God’s throne anywhere in the horizon. If they say no and obviously they will. . .then I tell them everything is going to be all right as long as He’s on the throne.
You must stabilize every situation before you can deal with it.
5. Address the immediate needs in the situation.
As an EMT I suggest you have people write out. . .the problems they’re facing.
Ask them to be specific. . .then ask them to assign a scripture that covers each of the problems they’re facing. Next, ask them to write a confession utilizing those scriptures to help them overcome the adversity they’ve been experiencing.
Psalm 102:1-2 in the New Living Translation says:
“[A prayer of one overwhelmed with trouble, pouring out problems before the Lord.] Lord, hear my prayer! Listen to my plea! Don’t turn away from me in my time of distress. Bend down to listen, and answer me quickly when I call to you.”
Once that task is accomplished. . .I ask them to list how God has blessed them in the past 24 hours. I then recommend they take the list of the blessings and begin praising Him for delivering them in the past.
Psalm 35:28 in the Amplified Bible says:
“And my tongue shall talk of Your righteousness, rightness, and justice, and of [my reasons for] Your praise all the day long.”
Praising God for what He’s done in the past is the first step to experiencing His miracle working power. . .in the now.
Deuteronomy 10:21 in the New Living Translation says:
“He alone is your God, the only one who is worthy of your praise, the one who has done these mighty miracles that you have seen with your own eyes.”
6. Deliver the patient to where he/she can get extended care.
In the natural, EMTs take patients to the nearest medical facility or hospital. . .where they can receive better care.
A spiritual EMT will direct their patients to the Word, a full gospel local church and especially the Holy Spirit. . .for their extended care and wellness treatment.
Every answer to every question that anyone has or will ever have can be found in the 66 chapters of God’s Word.
If you want to learn something new...all you have to do is read something that was written "in the beginning." In God’s Word, we will find every instruction we need on how to live the kind of life that God desires for us.
1 Timothy 1:5 in the New Living Translation says:
“The purpose of my instruction is that all believers would be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith.”
Once you’re in His Word. . .next you need to be in His presence.
Romans 8:26 in the Amplified Bible says:
“So too the [Holy] Spirit comes to our aid and bears us up in our weakness; for we do not know what prayer to offer nor how to offer it worthily as we ought, but the Spirit Himself goes to meet our supplication and pleads in our behalf with unspeakable yearnings and groanings too deep for utterance.”
The scripture is also clear about the need for our fellowship in a local church.
Hebrews 10:25 in the Amplified Bible says:
“Not forsaking or neglecting to assemble together [as believers], as is the habit of some people, but admonishing (warning, urging, and encouraging) one another, and all the more faithfully as you see the day approaching.”
The Word, the Holy Spirit and a full gospel church are the perfect prescription for anyone who has experienced trauma and the need for a spiritual EMT.
7. Be ready for your next emergency assignment.
Spiritual EMTs are always on call. . .24/7.
2 Timothy 4:2 in the Amplified Bible says:
“Herald and preach the Word! Keep your sense of urgency [stand by, be at hand and ready], whether the opportunity seems to be favorable or unfavorable. [Whether it is convenient or inconvenient, whether it is welcome or unwelcome, you as preacher of the Word are to show people in what way their lives are wrong.] And convince them, rebuking and correcting, warning and urging and encouraging them, being unflagging and inexhaustible in patience and teaching.”
Not only is the spiritual EMT always on call. . .they must be living and growing in a constant state of preparation.
2 Timothy 2:15 in the Amplified Bible says:
“Study and be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to God approved (tested by trial), a workman who has no cause to be ashamed, correctly analyzing and accurately dividing [rightly handling and skillfully teaching] the Word of Truth.”
One last thing. . .remember that everything you do. . .you’re doing for His glory.
Colossians 3:23 in the Amplified Bible says:
“Whatever may be your task, work at it heartily (from the soul), as [something done] for the Lord and not for men.”
In summing up the seven keys to being a spiritual Emergency Miracle Technician two more scriptures come to mind.
First, Joshua 3:5 should become our expectation for each new day.
“For tomorrow, Jehovah will do wonders among you.”
We should know that God is going to do mighty wonders and miracles among us.
Second, 1 Samuel 10:7 in the Message Bible says:
"When these confirming signs are accomplished, you'll know that you're ready: Whatever job you're given to do, do it. God is with you!”
Give your best. . .He asks for nothing less.
Matthew 25:26-27 in the Message Bible pretty much sums up this teaching.
"The master was furious. 'That's a terrible way to live! It's criminal to live cautiously like that! If you knew I was after the best, why did you do less than the least? The least you could have done would have been to invest the sum with the bankers, where at least I would have gotten a little interest.”
Never give God less than your best as a spiritual Emergency Miracle Technician.
